I had wanted to be a superhero as a child and then a pilot as a teen. Instead, I decided to get high to mask the confusion and pain. Then I broke from that and searched for someone to love and to return that love. Then I proceeded to leapfrog from one failure to another. No matter what the particulars are in each person’s trek through life, the question remains how you will spend your time.
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
Gandalf to Frodo in Lord of the Rings
What will you decide? The past is the lesson. The present is the point of choice. The future is pure potential. What will your story be?
Let another choose your path or make your own choice. Mask over the damage inside or take steps towards healing. Bring chaos into others’ lives or refuse until you are whole. Blame others, maybe even justifiably, or take responsibility for your life. Cheat others or find “win win” scenarios. Be unfaithful or be faithful to your partner. Lie or tell the truth . Disrespect or respect others. Add suffering or add goodness to the world. Quit or try again.
These are choices that you make every single day. You could blame God or others for all the evil and suffering in your life or the world or you could do your part to make it that much better of a place for all. Does it really matter what everyone else is doing? What are YOU doing? Do better. Be a person of good character. There is an abundance of those who are rich in superficial things – money, looks, stuff, surface relationships. Who you are and how you relate to others is the linchpin.
“Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
Dylan Thomas
